Stuck with What to Post? Use Your Values to Create Content

It’s the middle of the day. You just got off back to back calls, you open up social media on your phone and think, ‘Crap! I haven’t posted any content today!’ So, you frantically scroll through your photos and rack your brain for SOMETHING to put out there.

Sound familiar?

Here’s something to consider. If you were in public (which, I know Covid basically ruined for a while) and someone began a conversation with you, would you start panicking about what to say?

Or, would you just let the conversation happen naturally?

My guess is that the conversation would happen pretty authentically and you wouldn’t be searching your phone for random content to share.

That’s because your stories (aka your content) aren’t in your phone.

They’re not locked away in a deep dark cave where you have to pull them out of every time you want to say something.

They’re in your mind, tied to your experiences but just a little clouded in how they relate to your audience.

It’s only when you begin to treat your social media followers as if they were a conversation you were having, that you will begin to share your stories more easily and create content with confidence.

Your stories and the value you want provide to your audience are hiding in your experiences.

It’s your job to find which experiences are worth sharing and will build a connection to what it is you want to teach or share with your followers.

Here’s a simple way you can tap into your experiences to identify stories that will make creating content less stressful.

  • First, write down 2 of your core values.
  • Next, write down 2 beliefs you have about each of those values.
  • Then, write down 2 experiences or stories that come to mind about those beliefs.
  • Finally, think about how you can apply one of those stories to your social media audience.

By the time you do this, you should have 8 stories, which in turn can turn into 8 separate social media posts.

When you find yourself struggling with what to post, turn inward to what matters most to you – what are the things you believe in and the experiences that have shaped your way of thinking.
